The Anthropology of YouTube...

WOW, I watched a super-cool little video online last night about the "anthropology" of YouTube - the origins, the stories, the connective powers, the controversies and so on...I found it really interesting, especially to learn that it only just started in early 2005 - it feels like YouTube has been around a lot longer than that to me - it feels like so much a part of our daily lives now and such a *blessing* in so many ways - for sharing info, connecting with others, co-creating - I especially love to use it as a jukebox - the most *amazing* jukebox that I can just tap virtually any song name into and be watching a video with that song within seconds...wow...sending gratitude for YouTube today and all who sail in her... ;)

Suggested Foods, Herbs and Activities to Avoid During Pregnancy

In case you missed the article in my latest newsletter, I thought I'd re-post it here below for all to see, PLUS a couple of extra suggestions emailed in by readers - enjoy ;)

~~~~~~~~~~
Now, before you all get excited and start emailing us, I'm *not* pregnant personally - recently however, another raw woman wrote saying that she is two months pregnant and seeking guidance on which foods, herbs and activities to avoid whilst pregnant...having no personal experience in this area, I posted her request on Twitter and Facebook and now send huge THANKS to all of you who left responses for her :)
As promised, here below is a compiled list of all your great suggestions...please note, these are suggestions sent in by various people - you may not perhaps agree with ALL that is written here, please remember to take in this list with a gentle, open heart and to use your own intuition to guide you as to which of these things may or may not be appropriate for yourself, if you too are pregnant or open to new life joining you...
Please note too that there seem to be a lot of issues for pregnant women around meats, shellfish, fish, cheeses and other items like this that people sometimes eat - these items are not mentioned in the list below, as this list is primarily focused on raw vegan items...please feel free to research further online if you are concerned about animal products etc...
Please note too that alcohol/cigarettes/drugs/caffeine and processed foods are similarly all items not included in the lists below that are clearly best not consumed during pregnancy (or at all, from my perspective... ;).
on January the 16th I enjoyed:
1 quart water
3 cups passionfruit/mandarin/coconut water juice
3 cups greeeeeeen juice mixed with pineapple juice
a mango
2 cups water
shared cucumber salad with Mr. M; salad stuffed into nori sheets with Sea Clear, folowed by a carob yumball :)
2 mugs horchata tea
1 cup water
on January the 17th I loved:
1 quart water
3 cups watermelon/orange juice
3 cups greeeeeen juice mixed with pineapple juice
a mango and a papaya with a little coconut yoghurt
2 cups water
shared cucumber salad with Mr. M; salad stuffed into nori sheets with Sea Clear, followed by a carob "Brownie Batter" yumpot :)
2 mugs horchata tea
1 cup water
There are three sections below of items/activities to be cautious of during pregnancy: foods, herbs and activities; though some of the foods and herbs may overlap each other, I've done my best to divide them up in a way that I think most people can easily relate to:
Foods:
Parsley
Cilantro
Garlic
Cayenne/hot spices
Pineapple/papaya (esp seeds)/sesame seeds
Cacao
Agave
Flax seed
Aloe
Fresh wood sorrel
Herbs:
screen shot 2011-01-17 at 7.45.16 pm.png
*Much of the above list was compiled from the fabulous book "Wise Woman Herbal for The Childbearing Year" by Susun Weed.
*Master Herbalist Susun Weed also has a little article HERE on herbs that are supportive during pregnancy.
*There is also a big list of suggested herbs to avoid here:
http://www.herb-health-guide.com/herbs-to-avoid-during-pregnancy.html
(note, some of the "culinary" herbs are said to be ok in food prep in small amounts, not in "medicinal" doses though...e.g. basil, caraway seeds, celery seed, fresh horseradish, savory, majoram, nutmeg, rosemary, saffron, tarragon, thyme, watercress...)
on January the 18th I appreciated:
1 quart water
1 cup orange juice
3 cups greeeeeen juice mixed with pineapple juice
a mango
shared cucumber salad with Mr. M; salad stuffed into nori sheets with Sea Clear, folowed by a carob "Brownie Batter" yumpot :)
2 mugs of horchata tea
1 cup water
on January the 19th I loved:
1 quart water
3 cups watermelon/orange juice
3 cups greeeeeen juice mixed with pineapple juice
a dragon fruit and a mango
2 cups water
shared cucumber salad with Mr. M; salad stuffed into nori sheets with Sea Clear, folowed by a carob "Brownie Batter" yumpot :)
mug of reishi tea :)
1 cup water
Activities/States:
*Stress
*Contact with cat litter and other animal feces
*Contact with pesticides/pollutants/toxins/paint fumes/household chemicals/hair dyes and so on
*Fasting
*Electric blankets and water beds
*Ultrasounds and x-rays
*Amusement Park rides
*Taking systemic enzymes, ascorbic acid, antihistamines, antacids, laxatives, diuretics
*Tight clothing, high heeled shoes
*Standing for extended periods of time
*Loud noises (e.g. concerts)
*Airplane travel, any lengthy travel
*Hot baths/saunas/hot tubs/hot yoga/any activity or situation where you could become very hot
*Strenuous/vigrorous activities, especially in the third trimester e.g. kickboxing, intense hiking, scuba diving, trampolining, weight lifting, horseriding - any activities where there is the chance to fall, where balance is key or where high altitudes are involved
*Some yoga poses that put pressure on the belly, plus any exercises such as abdominal crunches that exert pressure on the abdominal muscles
I really hope that this list helps add some value and support to any raw mummas-to-be out there ;) Remember to use your own intuition on which foods etc are appropriate to you - and if you are pregnant and have been consuming/doing anything on this list, we would strongly encourage you not to go into any feelings of fear or "self-blame", remember that these are all just *suggestions*, from various sources - you are your own best guide for what feels appropriate to you. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to this list of suggestions and if you have any other ideas to add to these lists, please let us know at angela@rawreform.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
UPDATES: one newsletter reader sent us a link to a book on raw pregnancy HERE, someone else let us know that cherimoyas are not the best food choice while pregnant and a midwife, Shawna shared her thoughts below with us too:
"I am a midwife and lactation consultant, also a vegan and mother of 8 extremely healthy vegan children. All of the foods listed on your "caution" list are perfectly fine for consumption during pregnancy with the exception of "wood sorrel". Cilantro is very beneficial, papaya does wonders for late pregnancy heartburn and in many cultures regular consumption of foods containing hot chilies are part of their culture and have not proved dangerous. If a woman has an aversion to such during pregnancy then it makes sense for her to listen to her body. I myself ate spicy curry several nights a week during my 8th pregnancy to no ill effect but never would have even been able to tolerate the smell during my 1st pregnancy."
Shawna
All blessings to all life everywhere :)
Mr Monarch Interviews Daniel Vitalis - Soon :)
OoOoOOoOooooo, exciting news: Mr. M is back into the flow of "radio" interviews again :) His first guest this season will be the delightful Daniel Vitalis, in a couple of weeks' time - yeeeeeeee-HAH :) Here's the deets from Mr. M below:
"On Wednesday January 26th at 11am Pacific time, I am going to be interviewing Daniel Vitalis!
As many of you know, Daniel Vitalis supports a diet that includes animal protein. Daniel experimented with a raw food diet for about a decade and feels it didn't work for him. He felt that his immune system and nervous system were collapsing. He feels that everyone needs DHA, B12, and Cholesterol, which he says are only found in animal protein. He says that the supposed issues around Cholesterol are myths and that in fact Cholesterol is KEY for producing hormones such as testosterone and estrogen.
We are going to dig DEEP into these concepts! I personally have been eating totally Raw Vegan for 13 years and I am still feeling really GREAT! I know of others too who have eaten Raw Vegan for multiple decades. This is going to be a GREAT DISCUSSION!
Please don't misunderstand me here, Daniel and I are GREAT friends and this interview will be handled with PURE LOVE!
This interview is surely going to go over the hour mark and the ideas above will just be a portion of this EXCITING interview with Daniel Vitalis.
This is how this "Radio Show" interview will work: ANYONE can call in and listen to the interview LIVE at 11am Pacific time on January 26th. However, if you miss the live version of the interview, the only place that the playback will be available is in the new 'TRFW Benefits' program. You can sign up for this service anytime by clicking HERE!
To listen to this Radio Show with Daniel Vitalis LIVE, enter your email address below and we'll send you all the information you need to listen in:"
WELL :) In the last week the whole area was cleared out so that we can now see everything again and it is *SO* exciting for me to get out there again now, reconnect and get planting anew - I think we planted around 40+ different new seed varieties out there yesterday - we made a video tour of how things look at the moment - check it out below if you're interested - I'm excited to see how it's all going to look a few months from now too - LOVE it :)
Introducing The Raw Food World Benefits Program... :)
WOW, we are super-excited to announce our shiny new "Benefits Program" that we've working away on in the background for weeks now... :) It is a very special and unique creature and we hope that you'll enjoy it - I'll let Mr. Monarch explain it all here below:
"I mentioned in a previous Newsletter that for our 'At-Cost' specials, we order products in HIGH VOLUME so that we can pass the savings on to you. A customer then asked, why can't we just always order high volume all the time on key beneficial products such as Chlorella Tablets, and more, to pass these savings on. This enquiry helped solidify the idea of 'The Raw Food World Benefits Program'!
Joining this subscription program we have now put together is literally a 'No-Brainer'. Anyone who joins this subscription service gets access to a 13% Off coupon code that you can ALWAYS use, on any size order, on an ONGOING basis! Additionally, we have some of our KEY products available to members at 30 - 60% off, kind of like the 'At-Cost' specials... BUT!... these exclusive deals will be available ALL of the time! This list below of 'At-Cost' specials available to members only will just keep on getting bigger and bigger, as more and more people join the program. If you sign up today, you will have access to the following products at 30 - 60% off on an ONGOING basis, while at the SAME TIME you can also use the membership coupon code for another additional 13% Off any order!
These 30% - 60% off products include:
  • Chlorella Tablets, 250 grams - 1000 tablets
  • Spirulina Tablets, 250 grams - 500 tablets
  • Truly Raw Centrifuged Coconut Oil, 16oz
  • Certified Organic Jojoba Oil in Glass Jar, 2oz
    This doesn't affect our usual monthly 'At-Cost' specials. We'll still be offering a selection of new 'At-Cost' specials on a monthly basis, as we always have, for those of you not in the subscription service.
    Hitting Rock Bottom...
    In case you missed the article in my newsletter this week on "Hitting Rock Bottom", here's a recap ;)
    It's that time of year when many people are considering "New Year's Resolutions"... Yet as most of us recognise, the majority of these well-intended "Resolutions" seem to fall by the wayside a few days or weeks further down the line... I was considering this pattern recently and there are a few thoughts I'd like to share on this topic.
    It seems to me that many people find perceived "big" shifts in their lives very challenging to navigate, or even small shifts for that matter ;) Let's say for example that someone wants to shift to eating raw from a Standard American Diet (SAD)...this can seem like a *HUGE* leap in lifestyle on so many levels and even if the person takes steps forward such as removing processed foods from their house and stocking up on raw items, carving those new neural pathways to actually begin to consistently consume those raw items instead of going back to the old favourites can seem like a massive leap and oftentimes just "too" draining in the wider context of a busy modern life.
    If someone is already feeling stressed, wrung out, fatigued, unfulfilled in their working life and/or their relationships and so on, the perceived *EFFORT* involved in finding the willingness and energy to engage in what seems like a totally new way of life can feel like WAY too much to manage and so people throw up the flag and scurry back to their nearest fast food restaurant, sliding through that oh-so-familiar neural pathway instead, satisfying those twisted tastebuds, numbing themselves out with those processed food choices...and so the cycle continues...
    on January the 3rd I enjoyed:
    1 quart water
    water of a young coconut
    3 cups watermelon/orange juice
    a dragon fruit
    3 cups greeeeeeeen juice mixed with pineapple juice
    a papaya
    water of 2 young coconuts
    handful of chlorella tablets
    mug of reishi/shilajit/ormus tea
    1 cup water
    Physiologically and psychologically there is often SO much tying us to our food choices, as discussed at length in my book "Raw Emotions". What I find interesting to observe is that for so many of us, it seems to take us hitting "Rock Bottom" before we are finally willing to access the energy to make sincere shifts in our lives...e.g. if someone who has been eating SAD for decades and consistently struggling with any attempts to improve their intake suddenly learns that they have developed cancer in their body, they may *finally* be willing to direct their energy into improving their intake, making some healthier choices, taking some of those supplements and herbs that have been sitting on their shelves for months and so on...(though of course, many people won't even find the willingness to initiate shifts in their lives despite facing a health challenge such as cancer...)
    Hitting "Rock Bottom" can frequently give someone the impetus to finally shift...and *yet*, how much easier life could be for so many people if they would choose to direct their energy into embracing healing shifts in their lives *before* they ever reach Rock Bottom... I do feel that as the raw food movement and health awareness in general keeps on expanding, people can potentially find it easier to find the motivation and support to eat more healthily - there are so many groups to connect to, books, DVDs and other resources to refer to these days - we can collectively inspire each other into taking action NOW rather than allowing our collective health to steadily slide into a pit before we're willing to direct energy into making shifts - together we are so much more powerful than when we are each in our own little bubble of concerns and patterns ;)
    on January the 4th I loved:
    1 quart water
    3 cups watermelon/orange juice
    3 cups greeeeeeeen juice mixed with pineapple juice
    2 tbsp bee pollen
    3 cups greeeeeeeen juice mixed with pineapple juice
    water of a young coconut
    little bowl of zucchini pasta with basil/cilantro sauce (avocado, lime juice, basil, cilantro, sea salt, garlic), followed by half an AMAZING banana :)
    2 cups water
    on January the 5th I appreciated:
    1 quart water
    3 cups watermelon/orange juice
    3 cups greeeeeeeen juice mixed with pineapple juice
    a dragon fruit
    water of a young coconut
    little bowl of zucchini pasta with basil/cilantro sauce (avocado, lime juice, basil, cilantro, sea salt, garlic)
    mug of reishi/shilajit/ormus tea
    2 cups water
    SO, how can *you* help others today on a "preventative" path to boosting their health NOW, rather than watching them slide into a pit before dragging themselves out...? Reaching out to help others can of course be very tricky territory to navigate, as we can encounter huge resistance, anger, negativity and more...my suggestion would be to start with someone who you can clearly see is trying to improve their intake and struggling in some way - it might be someone at your local potluck group, maybe someone at your place of work, a family member, whomever comes to mind - see what kind of little offerings of support and assistance you might be able to extend to this person, or co-create together - maybe you plan to have a day making raw goodies together, you invite them over for a meal, lend them a book, take a visit to their house to see how you could together set things up to make it easier for them to make healthier choices and so on - for someone who is struggling, these small acts of support could mean ALL the difference in terms of them feeling more inspired and on track. Then, if they start to really integrate shifts in their own lives, imagine how much they can then go on to help others and so on and so on - the ripple keeps spreading...
    Some of us may think "I don't know enough myself to help anyone else" - to this I would suggest that we all, always have *something* to share with others, even if you've only been on a "healthier" path for a week, you're further down the learning curve than someone who just heard abt raw foods today... ;) So, I would love to suggest that we all take a deep healing breath, think of someone in our lives who might LOVE a helping hand on their path today and reach out to offer that support - together we can help to make major shifts feel fun while simultaneously helping so many people in our networks to sidestep the pattern of ever hitting "Rock Bottom"...
    Here's to vibrantly healthy beings everywhere - Happy New Year :)
