OOoo lala...the Monarch and I are in grand old London town right now and went to eat at Chad Sarno’s amazing new Saf Restaurant on Friday night. Wow. It really is a dining treat – like the ‘Pure Food and Wine’ of Europe ;) BEAUTIFUL space, great lighting and décor, classy, shiny, yummy presentation, friendly staff, nice outdoor garden area and a unique menu of raw-markable creations made with the best quality fresh ingredients.
We LOVED the rich tacos dish, for example, which TOTALLY reminded me of the filling ‘Mexican’ meals I used to love in my pre-raw days. We also loved the creative and unusual offerings like a whole ‘smorgasbord’ of different raw ‘cheese’ dishes, a yummy little bowl of some kind of pickled cucumber that came with the sushi, or the fresh edible pansy flowers served with many of the dishes.
The desserts were absolutely superlative, especially the lucuma cookies and melt-in-the-mouth chocolate ganache tart...YUMMMM... It was fun to finally meet Chad Sarno in person too, after years of hearing what a fantastic chef he is (which we can certainly now affirm ;) I love too that they have a little ‘shop’ in the corner of the restaurant, where people can pick up raw treats and ingredients to take away with them. The clientele seemed to range enormously, from super-shiny-looking individuals who looked as if they may have been raw for the last few decades, to many who quite probably may have been having the first all-raw meal of their lives...a great variety...it’s that kind of a place, like Pure Food and Wine, where you can easily take ‘non-raw’ friends/family, without potentially freaking them out too much ;) LOL – the food is so gourmet, they may not even realise it’s ‘raw’, if you don’t tell them... ;) I’ll get the photos from our night there uploaded soon to Flickr I hope... ;)

on August the 30th I had:

1 quart water
mug of ‘treasure’ tea
1.5 cups celery, cucumber, broccoli, ginger, carrot juice

¾ of a fresh durian and a little raw chocolate (WOH ;)

mug of rooibus tea
3 cups water

mug of rooibus tea

Juice Glorious Juice
By Angela Stokes

Juice, glorious juice
Fresh, raw and delicious,
Press veggies or fruits,
For medicine that’s delicious
Kale, spinach and cucumber,
‘What next?’ is the question.
Add celery every day
To improve digestion...

Juice, glorious juice
There’s nothing quite like it.
Two green drinks a day,
We suggest you try it.
Just picture green juice on tap,
Re-balancing you,
Oh, juice,
Wonderful juice,
Marvellous juice,
Glorious juice.

Drink glorious juice,
When your stomach’s empty
For best absorption
And chew your juice plenty.
What is it we dream about?
What feels so loving?
Tall pitchers of green juice served
With a grin :)

Juice, glorious juice,
Don’t mind what it looks like:
Green, crimson or puce,
It’s ALL about the enzymes ;)
Just adding in wild greens,
Our senses go reeling.
What else could compare to these
Vibrant feelings?

Juice, glorious juice,
What wouldn’t we give for
THAT extra bit more?
Chlorophyll is the best cure...
Why take multivitamins,
When you could just drink raw juice?
Oh, juice,
Magical juice,
Wonderful juice,
Marvellous juice,
Fabulous juice,
Beautiful juice
GLORIOUS JUICE :)

With love and super-juicy smiles,

Raw 'Nutella' Anyone...???

OooOooo, here’s an exciting offer from the Monarch, which those of you on the ‘Insider List’ will have seen already ;)
(If you’re not yet on our ‘Insider List’ already, to get notified with the full details whenever we have very special offers on, you can message Mr. M HERE and he’ll add you to the list ;)
Ok, here’s a little treat he has for y’all right now...

“I ordered a mass of the 'Better Than Roasted' sprouted nut butters for our 'at cost' sale a couple of months back and we still have some available. The expiry dates for these supremely nutritious, sprouted nut butters are anywhere between December 2008 and March 2009, which of course means they’re all still in great condition ;). I’m now offering them at an even lower price than before, to move them out of the door. Prices start at I wouldn't pass these BEST TASTING Nut Butters up!!! Enjoy!!! CLICK HERE to order."

The eight yummy flavours on offer are:

MmmmMmMmmm, while we’re on the subject of these nut butters, I would LOVE to share with you one of the YUMMIEST recipes we’ve discovered to enjoy them with, so far... Ready...? ;) We take the liquidy, yummy smooth hazelnut butter and mix it in a little bowl with our straight raw carob powder (plus maybe a little lucuma for an extra-sweet treat ;). That’s it – hazelnut butter and carob powder = WOW :O
I don’t know abt you, but when I was transitioning from a ‘cooked’ life into being raw, carob products were a MAJOR part of my journey ;) Vegan, sugar-free carob versions of more well-known, mainstream chocolate/hazelnut spreads were a daily staple for me. Now I feel like I’m able to re-create that smooth, gorgeous gooeyness with RAW ingredients – WOW – HOW blessed we are :) LOVE it...
So, you can get stock up on nut butters and carob HERE if you like (...if I don’t get to the warehouse before you, that is... ;)

on August the 26th I had:

1 quart water
mug of ‘choco’ tea
2 heaped tsps wheatgrass powder
3 fresh figs
3 cups water
shot of wheatgrass/ginger/lime juice
1 cup celery, cucumber, parsley, endive, fennel, garlic juice (PHEW ;)
2 cups ‘energy soup’ with coconut chips stirred in, followed by a little bowl of durian ice cream and pieces of raw chocolate – WOW ;)
mug of ‘choco’ tea
1 quart water

By now, those of you in the US will surely have heard of the plans to start irradiating greens such as spinach and lettuces for sale in stores...hmmmmm...yes...(or if you haven’t read about it yet, pls click HERE to get informed). Needless to stay, this is clearly reason more than EVER to get your hands in the soil and start to GROW YOUR OWN FOOD, if you’re not already...you don’t need masses of land to supply yourself with a gorgeous, healthy, year-round crop of vibrant leafy greens. You don’t in fact even need a GARDEN – you can grow in abundance in an apartment if necessary ;) Check out books like ‘Square Foot Gardening’, The Sproutman’s Sprout Book, fill your window boxes, plant out in pots – whatever works for you...the time is NOW ;)
ENJOY... :)

Would you like to train to become an ultra-yummy raw chef? Mmmm, thought so ;) Well, you’re in luck, as dear raw chef Jody Allen, who used to run the gorgeous ‘Loving Life Café’ in Pennsylvania is running her weekend ‘Raw Foods – Beyond the Recipes’ certification classes again, starting in September... Mr. Monarch had the joy last year of speaking at Jody’s ‘Loving Life Café’ that she ran with her partner Joey. The Monarch reported that they truly served some of the BEST raw food dishes he’s ever had (the cafe is now closed, as Jody is focusing on teaching instead ;). Jody is totally dedicated to making food with LOVE and it resonates through her every creation ;) She also works culinary wonders re-creating old favourite cooked food dishes as raw masterpieces.
Here’s what Jody says abt the classes she now offers:

“Incorporating raw and living foods into our diets is a step many people want to take, but become frustrated with the money and time involved in learning “how to do it”. It is my mission to help people make the shift over to eating more of these wonderful foods.
Learning how to do something from a book is possible, but nothing matches hands on experience to he
lp save time and money!!!

Here’s what’s in store for you:

*Learn the basics involved in raw foods preparation: the ingredients, the techniques, the equipment;

*Learn fanta
stic foundational recipes that you can use to make many foods you already know and like such as pasta, pizza, lasagna, tacos, “chicken” salad, and yes, chocolate!!!;

*Learn how to improvise to convert cooked foods into raw ones;

*Understanding how to pull it all together – what your raw lunches, breakfasts, and dinners can be; how to schedule your cooking around your lifestyle; and have things available to be eaten when you want them.”

…and here’s some feedback from one happy participant from last year:

“Jody is a superb teacher! Take her classes – you will learn more than the recipes, you will learn the rhythm of how to “do raw food” and fit it into your lifestyle. As a cooking teacher myself, I was impressed with her teaching style. While she is very experienced in raw foods preparation, she has not forgotten what it is like to be a beginner and she will teach you to go beyond the recipes to learn how to create things on your own. The food tastes fantastic, too!”

The upcoming dates for Jody’s classes this year are:

Sept 20-22
Sept 27-29
October 11-13
October 18-20
November 1-3
November 9-11th
December 6-8

Classes run daily from 9am-5pm and the investment in your raw repertoire is $1000, including the cost of the foods, education and a copy of Jody’s book called ‘Recipes Made With Love’ (which you can also purchase as an e-book from her site HERE). Jody can also help you to find accommodation in the local area if necessary. You can contact her on love@lovinglifecafe.com or 717-476-3065. You can also see her site at www.lovinglifecafe.com.

Would You Care to Join Us...???

Special Announcement:

Raw Spirit British Invasion Part 2 ;)
Some of you may recall that last year there was a British ‘invasion’ of the Raw Spirit Airwaves, involving myself, Mr. Monarch (a momentary defector ;), Ms. Magic, Lady Suki of Zoe and Mr. Joel Gazdar, I believe…WELL, teacups at the ready, folks, it’s happening again ;)
The count-down is now truly ON for the Raw Spirit Festival in Sedona (Sept 12th-14th) - it seems that most of the human raw yumsters on Earth will either be in attendance, or there in 'spirit'... Well, in preparation for this magnificent event, tomorrow (Sunday, August the 24th) – myself, Monsieur. Gazdar, The Honourable Suki Zoe and Madame Karen Knowler shall all be nobly interfering with the international 'Raw Spirit' radio dials, to discuss the thoroughly important matter of CLEANSING with that ever-gorgeous Goddess of Raw, Laura Fox ;)
We'll be discussing what can help, what doesn’t help, favourite anecdotes, suggestions, mishaps and perhaps even some nose-wrinkling details (Suki’s a colon hydrotherapist after all… ;)
So, put the biscuits on hold perhaps and join us at 6pm British time tomorrow (that’s 10am Pacific Time, 1pm East Coast) for some jaw-dropping, eye-popping, outlook-shifting discussions, all accompanied by the charming clatter of teacups of course ;)

You can listen in live HERE: www.rawspiritshow.com
or simply call (347) 633-9179

...or if you are unable to attend promptly, you can always listen to the archived version HERE...

May I Be Frank...?

EXCITING: have you seen anything about the new ‘raw transformation’ documentary that’s in the works called ‘May I be Frank?’? I think it looks GREAT :) One reader, Gina, sent me THIS LINK this week to an article in Ode Magazine about the ‘star’ of the film, Frank Ferrante, who agreed to participate in this ‘sort of reverse Super Size Me’ production, with the assistance of some of those beautiful people from Café Gratitude.
55-year-old Frank’s background involves a working-class Brooklyn upbringing, drug addiction, alcoholism, arrests, periods in mental institutions, suicide attempts, obesity, hepatitis, heavy medications and strained relationships. PHEW...quite a bit to work through then, potentially ;) It looks like it will be a very entertaining, moving and inspiring film, especially to share with loved ones. You can watch the trailer HERE – it’s so well put together – I love it and look forward to seeing the full-length film when it’s ready – ENJOY :)

YUMMY – a fantastic new raw food hangout has opened here in Brighton and I’m VERY excited about it :) It’s called ‘Manna’ and is hosted by the lovely Warren and Andreas. We shimmied along there yesterday to see how things are unfolding in their opening days. I think it is looking very beautiful – a light, bright, welcoming space painted in tranquil greens and yellows, with a generous deli counter packed with fresh greens, musical instruments hanging on the walls for customers to jam with, knowledgeable, friendly service, a lovely garden space with grape vines, a shop space with all kinds of pre-packaged goodies for sale and of course fresh juices, smoothies, raw meals, teas and more. I think this is a VERY exciting development for the UK raw food scene...
We tried the raw ‘burger’ dish and it was truly superlative. The venue has a late license, so the plan is to host events/jam sessions etc in the evenings, which will be such a blessing, to have a ‘clean’ space like this for people to gather and connect. WONDERFUL :)
If you’d love to get on down to Manna, here is the address:

Manna
24 Coombe Road
Brighton
BN2 4EA

You can also see more info at: www.galaxyofvitality.com. Maybe see you there someday soon if you’re in this area ;)

Mug of choco tea and selection of raw chocolates – eeeeeek ;)

Funky Raw :)

YUMMY. Just got back last night from the simply BEAUTIFUL Funky Raw festie in the Sussex countryside here in England. Wow, what a delicious treat – wonderful friends, delicious food from ‘The Raw Kitchen’, gorgeous sunny weather, chats about the Anastasia books, live music all weekend, camping out under the full moon, listening to interesting presentations and LOVING the fantastic energy buzzing through this gathering of lovely like-minded, joyous beings...
I really enjoyed going on a foraging walk with Rob of Funky Raw and also listening to a great permaculture talk with inspiring stories of gardens made-over into edible paradises :) YUMMMM...
You can see a few of my pics from the event on my Flickr stream HERE.
Thanks to everyone who came along to my talk and chatted at the RawReform booth – I saw SO many new faces this weekend, which I find very encouraging, in terms of the expansion of the UK raw food movement...indeed, the festie totally sold out this year and apparently could have easily sold out TWICE over, considering the number of people wanting tickets – so, be sure to get in quick next year if you’d love to be there... ;) I highly recommend it...

1 quart water
3 cups green juice with barleygrass, celery, cucumber, fennel, ginger, kale, carrot
2 cups ‘energy soup’ with coconut chips, followed by ½ a bag of freeze-dried durian = YUM :)

Yeeeeee-HAH – guess what? Raw food is front-page news in Iceland ;) LOL... I discovered today that Icelandic newspaper ’24 Stundir’ (24 hours) put an article and picture about my weight loss story on their front page last Friday (see picture to the right)...I was wondering why the traffic to my site suddenly sky-rocketed on Friday ;) LOL...
Can you IMAGINE the impact such a message could potentially have in countries such as the US/Canada/the UK/Australia and so on, if this simple message of a transformative raw food lifestyle was presented as FRONT-PAGE news, in national newspapers...???
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I LOVE Iceland – thank you, Icelandic journalists, for choosing to put health and well-being first, with integrity...(BTW, the headline says ‘Angela lost more than 80 kilos’, if your Icelandic’s a bit rusty... ;)

on August the 17th I had:

1 quart water
1.5 cups green juice
2 cups energy soup with coconut chips stirred in, followed by ½ a bag of freeze-dried durian – WOW :)

on August the 18th I had:

1 quart water
mug of pau d’arco tea
3 cups veggie juice: celery, cucumber, fennel, endive, carrot, ginger

Have you had a Juice Feasting journey yet in your life? How was it...? Or if you haven’t embarked into a liquid lifestyle yet and feel drawn, what is your motivation? Do you feel ready...?
One juicy raw diva, Aleesha Stephenson is currently many weeks into a Juice Feast and she wrote a little review of my book ‘A Juice Feaster’s Handbook’, for her beautiful online magazine ‘Timeless Spirit’. Here’s an excerpt from her article:

So many things are covered in this handbook but I have to say my favourite is where she explains the value of each juice and the different combinations she recommends. Once you've been juicing for a while, it's amazing how you can get stuck in a rut of making the same thing day after day. This book assisted me 'mix it up' a little in my head and get some new ideas for juices!
Anyone who has an interest in Juice Feasting, whether it's for 3 days or 92 days should get a copy of this book. Consider it your Juice Feasting Bible! I know I do.

You can read Aleesha’s whole review and check out her ‘Timeless Spirit’ magazine HERE.
...and if you haven’t read ‘A Juice Feaster’s Handbook’ yet and would love to juice up YOUR life a little more, you can get a copy of the book HERE. ENJOY... :)

I’m feeling SO excited about the Funky Raw Festie in Sussex this weekend – just about to head off there very soon as I write this...and reflecting on the beautiful synchronicity that it’s coinciding with a Full Moon in Aquarius tomorrow, on Saturday – how IDEAL :) We’re just coming out of a New Moon in Leo and here’s some of what marvellous astrologer Lisa Dale Miller shares about this Full Moon tomorrow:

“This is the Full Moon for involvement in something larger than you. Remember that Aquarius rules the breakdown of the old ways by questioning the status quo. Those who create revolutionary change in societies are always the ones who can vision far beyond accepted beliefs and structures. Step fully into a commitment to teach and serve by breaking down the attraction to focusing only on your own life. Selfless giving to others is a true Aquarian vision of working for the collective upliftment of all sentient beings. This is the Full Moon to honor freedom, idealism, humanitarianism, egalitarianism, and the revolutionary impulse toward reform, without causing harm to anyone. Aquarius is the impulse to raise-up everyone and leave no one behind. So in service to these calls to action, become responsible and find out what is really happening around you. Get involved in your community, volunteer your time, and raise awareness in your neighborhood. It’s summer, have a block party and raise funds for a good cause.”

Sounds wonderful – enjoy your celebrations, brothers and sisters :) You can read Lisa's report in full on her site HERE.

Ready for 'International Green Smoothie Day'...???

MMmmmmmm, thank you all SO much for all the yummy birthday wishes that have been pouring in from internet-world this week – they are very much appreciated ;) We celebrated the occasion with a special trip to pick fresh wild Icelandic blueberries at a lovely location next to a national park. It was very blissful, out in the sun, collecting up Mother Earth’s delicious offerings...you can see a few pics from the day HERE (including this one to the right of the BEAUTIFUL blueberry birthday cake creation Mr. Monarch made ;)

My dear friend Solla also gifted me a NETI POT for my birthday :O LOL – FUN ;) (If you’re not familiar with neti pots, they are little pots, not dis-similar to a teapot in appearance, used to clean out the nasal passages/sinus with salt water.) The Monarch and I have both used the neti pot a few times already and we’re both AMAZED at the feelings of clearing and open-ness it brings to our sinus cavities...breathing seems to automatically come more deeply after using it...very interesting – another new ‘detox’ gadget to play with ;) LOL...

After a whirlwind last few days in Iceland, I’m back in England again now...and the Monarch is back in the States :(
He speaks Thursday night in CT and Saturday in NYC – you can see all the details of his events HERE. Meanwhile, on the right-hand-side of the ocean, I’ll be attending the sublime Funky Raw Festie this weekend, which has now ceremoniously sold out of tickets...it’ll be GREAT fun, I’m sure...keep visualising bright sunny festival days, despite the current gale-force winds in southern England ;)

OoOOoooooLALA, what a FABULOUS last few days it’s been...a few nights ago we gave another raw food talk here in Reykjavik, to another PACKED room of lovely, lively participants – thanks to all who came along :)

Have you ever noticed how many LEOs there are in the raw food movement...? In my travels and connections as a raw foodie it often seems to me like a noteworthy number of the raw-inclined are born in the sign of the lion, myself included ;) Must be all that SUN energy drawing us forward I guess, either that, or maybe it’s just my personal leo-radar drawing my attention to them all... ;) lol...check it out sometime when you’re at raw gatherings – see how many people are leos and lemme know if you see the same pattern ;)
So, today happens to be the birthday of raw leo guys David Wolfe and Glen Colello (who runs Catch a Healthy Habit Café in CT, where Mr Monarch will actually be speaking next week, on August the 14th more details HERE). Happy Birthday guys :)
Other raw leos include Dhrumil, Markus Rothkranz, Roz Gruben (apparently we have the same birthday: August the 10th), Reuben (Kate Magic’s son), Evie (Shazzie’s daughter), my wonderful editor Sue, my dear friends Zoe and Lizzy and countless others I’ve met along the way... (my grandfather and grandmother were incidentally also both leos - they weren't raw though... ;)

Sunday 3 August 2008

It's ALL so YUMMY :)))

OOoOoOOoohhhhhhh, what a LOVELY day it’s been here in Iceland today :))) We went on a wonderful ‘celebration’ trip out into the countryside and it was YUMMY :) It was a year ago today that Mr. Monarch got down on one knee and proposed to me, in England ;) It’s also the biggest ‘Holiday Weekend’ of the year here in Iceland, plus our new friend Eirikur leaves tomorrow for a month-long sea trip…SO, all-in-all it seemed like a mighty fine day to go out for a fun trip together :)

You can see a set of pics from today HERE:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/29292390@N08/

We stopped off first at Solheimar, the ecovillage where I first lived when I came to Iceland back in 2001 – we saw the trees that I’d planted back then, visited the greenhouses where I used to help raise cucumbers, bell peppers and tomatoes, bought stacks of their organic veggies, met some old friends and walked around the gorgeous grounds. It was SO fun for me to be there again :)
Then we went to the legendary ‘Geysir’ area – the original ‘geysir’ that all others were named after... ;) A BEAUTIFUL geothermal area...onwards to Gullfoss – one of the biggest and most aesthetically pleasing waterfalls in Iceland. We wound up the day with a trip to see the fishing boat Eirikur is setting off on tomorrow – WOW – what a different life than most of us are probably used to ;) It was so inspiring to see his sprouting racks and juicer set up on board, truly demonstrating that you CAN eat raw/living foods while travelling/wherever you are, if you CHOOSE to ;) Wonderful...

on August the 1st I had:

1 quart water
mug of licorice tea
2 cups green juice: cucumber, celery, fennel, kale, watercress, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, ginger, carrot, parsley
2 cups ‘energy soup’ with mung bean sprouts, lentil sprouts and coconut chips stirred in and okra on the side. Followed by some goji and pomegranate powders
mug of ‘choco’ tea
1 quart water
2 cups ‘energy soup’ with mung bean sprouts, lentil sprouts and coconut chips stirred in and fresh okra on the side. Followed by some goji and pomegranate powders
mug of ‘choco’ tea
3 cups water
2 pieces of durian – YUMMMM :)
3 cups water

Ok, so many of you have been writing to ask about ‘energy soup’, ‘choco tea’ and ‘lime swirls’ that I thought it might be easiest to explain what these things are here ;)

‘Energy Soup’
The energy soup I’ve been having daily for the last few weeks is smthg like this, for 2 people:

1/2 a cucumber
1/2 a red or yellow bell pepper
a generous handful of leafy greens: spinach, kale, lettuce etc
little bunch of coriander
a little bit of garlic - maybe half a clove
juice of half a lemon
little handful of dulse
FAT: either 3 tbsp tahini or the flesh of a small avocado
Water or a mix of water and rejuvelac (if you have it) or - maybe 3 cups - abt half way up the blender, once all the veggies etc are already in the blender ;)

Place everything into a high-speed blender, blend and serve ;) We usually stir in some coconut chips, mung beans or smthg similar to chew on ;) ENJOY :)

----------------

‘Choco Tea’
The teas I'm drinking at the moment are nearly all 'Yogi' Teas - from this company: http://www.yogitea.com - LOVE these teas ;)

-----------------
‘Lime Swirls’
The lime swirls are smthg my friend makes by blending together (I think) coconut meat, coconut water, lime juice, soaked cashews and a little yacon powder and yacon syrup. Then she puts them in little cake moulds, into the freezer - we can then pop one out whenever we want a sweet treat ;)

Hope that helps ;)

on August the 2nd I had:

1 quart water
mug of choco tea
3 cups green juice: cucumber, celery, fennel, kale, watercress, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, ginger, carrot, parsley
2 cups ‘energy soup’ with mung bean sprouts, lentil sprouts and coconut chips stirred in and okra on the side. Little bowl of hand-blended yum: tahini, lucuma, maca, cinnamon, yacon, water, with gojis stirred in for chewiness ;)
3 cups water
1 cup green juice: cucumber, celery, fennel, kale, watercress, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, ginger, carrot, parsley
2 cups durian smoothie: blended durian, yacon powder, cinnamon, vanilla, water, with gojis stirred in for chewing
mug of ‘choco’ tea
2 cups water

1 quart water
2 nori rolls stuffed with avocado, cucumber, bell pepper, spinach, sunflower greens, dulse. Little bowl of blended yum: almonds, lucuma, maca, cinnamon, yacon, water, with gojis stirred in for chewiness ;)
mug of ‘choco’ tea
